The end of a project is the easiest time to collect its paperwork, and years later it is the hardest time to find it. One folder, on paper or on your computer, with the right documents in it makes conversations with your insurer quicker and a claim easier to support.
What to keep
- The written scope and the final invoice, showing what was done and what it cost.
- Permits and inspection sign-offs.
- Product details: the make, model and colour of cabinets, counters, tile, flooring, fixtures and appliances.
- Manufacturer warranty documents and any registration confirmations.
- Photographs of each room before, during and after the work, including inside open walls where pipes or wiring were replaced.
Refresh your home inventory
A home inventory is a list of your belongings, with photographs or video, that helps if you ever need to make a claim. A renovation is a natural moment to update it room by room. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes free guidance on making one, linked below.
Keep a copy away from the house
Store one copy somewhere other than the house itself, such as cloud storage or with a relative, so the records survive whatever might damage the home.
What we hand over
At the walk-through we give you the written scope, the permit records and a list of the products installed, so your folder starts complete.
